Why Is It So Important To Clean Electronics After a Fire?

7/22/2021 (Permalink)

A person cleaning a camera For proper fire cleanup, you need to tackle the cleaning of electronics as soon as you can.

Why Is It Critical To Clean Electronics Following A Fire?

When your Santana Row, CA home has a fire in it, almost everything in it may be affected. Smoke damage can hurt various parts of and items in your home, including the following:

  • Electronics
  • Clothing
  • Building Materials

The fire cleanup process you have to undertake depends on what gets damaged in your home. Porous building materials and clothing may need to be thrown out. Non-porous belongings may need to be cleaned with ultrasonic equipment. If you have television sets, radios, DVD players, computers, or kitchen appliances that get damaged by soot, it is important you get them properly cleaned before putting them back into use.

Could Present a Hazard

If you fail to clean your smoke damaged electronics, they could present a major hazard. For example, turning on a computer that is lined with soot can lead to an electronic failure due to corrosion. Smoke residue contains acid that can corrode the metal surfaces in electronic devices. If you turn on the electronics before they are properly cleaned, you may end up doing more damage than the fire did. A soot-lined computer, TV or radio could be the source of another house fire.

Can Stop Extensive Corrosion

Typically, electronics only get further damaged when they are turned on. However, sometimes even being exposed to moisture or different temperatures can cause the corrosion to begin without the device even being powered on. For proper fire cleanup, you need to tackle the cleaning of electronics as soon as you can. The longer you wait to remove the soot the better the chances are that you'll end up with a destroyed electronic device.

Sometimes electronics come out of a fire without obvious signs of damage. However, one important part of fire cleanup is knowing that these items still need to be cleaned. The smoke building that may be in them needs to be completely removed by a fire restoration specialist to ensure no more damage is done.

5 Tips for Staying Safe While Using Space Heaters

7/13/2021 (Permalink)

Portable Electric Heater, Halogen Light Heater Space heaters can be a great way to stay cozy.

Avoid Dealing With a Burned Space Heater

Space heaters can be a great way to stay cozy. During cold weather in Saratoga, CA, they can help you to be more comfortable in your home, but they can also be a fire hazard. Luckily, if you keep a few simple safety tips in mind, you should be able to avoid dealing with a burned space heater.

1. Keep the Area Clear

One of the easiest ways a space heater fire can start is if there are flammable materials in contact with the heater. Keep anything flammable, especially items made from paper and fabric, well away from the heater.

2. Choose the Right Location

Anywhere that is too confined can create a perfect recipe for a burned space heater. Don’t put the heater beneath desks or other furniture. Instead, try to put the heater in an open area where it won’t come into contact with anything.

3. Pay Attention

It can be dangerous to leave space heaters unattended. You should never leave them turned on when you’re out of the room or away from home. If you’re paying attention to the heater, you should be able to stop problems before they turn into emergencies.

4. Use Safety Features

When shopping for a heater, you can try to find one that has an automatic shut-off feature. While you still should never leave the space heater unattended, it can be one more layer of safety.

5. Keep Filters Clean

Space heaters have filters that can become clogged with dust, pet hair, or other debris in the air. Clogged filters can cause the heater to overheat and ignite. Clean the filter regularly to help prevent any issues.

Fires can be dangerous and lead to extensive (as well as expensive) smoke cleanup. Don’t get stuck with a burned space heater. Being mindful of how and where you use your heater can help you to stay safe.

SERVPRO takes away the ash and smoke – but to where?

Part of the reason why so many people trust us to restore their homes after a fire is due to our strict following of local and federal regulations. When disposing of waste and byproducts, we make no exceptions to this rule.

Most of our San Jose fire damage projects involve gallons of ash and smoke residues trapped in many different ways. Over the course of a single house fire restoration project, we may generate wastes in these forms and more:

  • Liquid waste containing both residues and cleaning agents
  • Solid dry powder containing ash and potential contaminants
  • Bulk garbage that may be contaminated with hazardous materials

Different chemicals require different methods of disposal. Some may be tossed in with regular garbage, but most of our byproducts require professional handling and careful destruction at chemical waste processing facilities. Our meticulous tracking and disposal practices ensure that hazardous byproducts never touch the soil or drains outside your home.

You can explore the walls for yourself from several parks in the East Bay area, including:

  • Mission Peak Regional Reserve
  • Tilden Regional Park
  • Ed. R Levin County Park

The walls are always open and always free, so why not come check them out?

Will Indoor Air Quality Be an Issue Now?

Any fire leaves behind copious amounts of soot and smoke particles that threaten indoor air quality. It is equally important that we are mindful of remaining moisture from water or chemicals used to extinguish the flames. Any moisture left behind creates the perfect environment for mold and mildew to thrive, which brings the potential for health effects.

We have skilled technicians that utilize the right filtration tools and equipment for the job to restore air quality while eliminating odor-causing particulates, such as:

  • Air Scrubbers – An air scrubber helps to lessen the colonization of microorganisms throughout the air while helping to remove debris and particulates. With the help of HEPA filtration, air enters the machine where the filter grabs onto microbes, airborne debris, and particles.
  • Hydroxyl Generators – This is dual-acting equipment that helps deodorize your household's interior while purifying and filtering the air. The hydroxyl units also have HEPA filtration technology that allows them to capture particulates from the surrounding environment.

Are These Soot Stains Removable from All Surfaces?

The heat from the fire ripping through your home leads to surface area charring. For a standard restoration project, the best option is usually resurfacing or replacement, but these may be costly and time-consuming. SERVPRO technicians utilize various advanced equipment and techniques that can handle even the toughest smoke and soot residue. For example, soda blasting with pressurized air releases high-speed sodium bicarbonate that works to strip away charring and residues. Due to deodorizing properties, the sodium bicarbonate also removes odorous elements from the materials treated.

Particles from smoke and soot are known for settling rapidly on walls, ceilings, and other surfaces after a fire. If you use DIY methods, this takes much time, and you could bring on further damage that makes your efforts counterproductive. SERVPRO technicians have tools like pressure washers and vacuums to help pull up residue, and HEPA filtration pulls loose particles inside to keep them from redistributing into the air.

Will I Still Be Able to Smell Smoke?

When we address a fire damage restoration project, handling tough smoke odors is one of our primary concerns. Every step allows us to break down these stubborn residues while also finding all cracks and crevices where odorous particulates might have traveled. Some of the steps include:

  • The possibility of packing up and moving contents and furnishings off-site for further cleaning and deodorization. This allows us to prevent soot and smoke residue transfer into other unaffected areas of your home.
  • Technicians carefully clean surfaces riddled with residue, never leaving any space untreated. Our Green Fleet comes stocked with various EPA-registered cleaning agents for removal of residue on materials like drywall, wood, plastics, glass, and metals.
  • In areas where pungent odors are present, we may recreate the event that caused odor penetration to begin with. By heating deodorizing agents with our fogging technology, we can put out a chemical cloud to penetrate materials deeply to trap odors and pull them out.
  • Some exposed surfaces may also be sealed off using specialized primer, which then gets finished off with the final paint color. If odors migrate throughout your HVAC system, we also have special sealants to stop the particulates in their tracks.

Fire damage restoration is an area where SERVPRO of Campbell excels. If you would like to have a team come out to your property after you suffer loss from a house fire, give us a call 24/7 at (408) 371-4001.

How Can You Get Rid of All the Soot Covering Everything?

When it comes to fire restoration in San Jose, or anywhere else, cleaning and removing soot from the property is a major task in every home. SERVPRO specialists train extensively to match our efforts against each type of soot and the surfaces they cover. This allows our response team members to preserve as much of your home’s structure and personal property as possible.

Where Does the Response Team Begin?

We start where the most damage has happened. When it comes to layers of soot, that means both near the fire’s origin and on surfaces more vulnerable to the acids and stains in soot. Since many home fires begin in the kitchen, we’ll use one as an example.

Soot in the kitchen contains particles from wood, plastic, metal, and food. This mix of burned material results in sticky layers that can be difficult to remove. If the soot is on linoleum floors, wood tables, and cabinets, our specialists know that it has to be removed immediately since the surfaces of both can soften or crack due to the heat. They wipe down each surface with a dry sponge to remove as much soot as they can before using a cleaning agent.

Marble countertops and metal appliances are more resistant to damage, but our specialists still move quickly. They wipe down these surfaces with a dry sponge to remove most of the soot, but they still use a cleaner for a thorough removal.

Can SERVPRO Repair Surfaces Affect By the Fire?

Yes, SERVPRO specialists can repair minor cracking or splits in wood surfaces. If the linoleum softened to the point where soot or other particles are embedded in the surface, team members can replace that flooring to restore your kitchen to its original appearance.

How Can I Clean Soiled Possessions After I Suffer From Fire Damage in San Jose?

6/5/2020 (Permalink)

burned contents of a home after a fire As soon as the firefighters leave, your best bet is to be on the phone with our representatives.  We are available 24/7.

SERVPRO Can Use a Combination of Chemicals and Cleaning Methods to Clean Any Soiled Contents Inside Your San Jose Home

If an inferno ignites inside your house in San Jose, the smoke created by the burnt materials can flow to every room inside your home. Once the smoke contacts cooler surfaces, it can solidify and turn into soils and soot residue that can adhere to the various surfaces inside your structure.

During any fire damage project in San Jose, our SERVPRO technicians know that cleaning contents can be as big of a job as cleaning your soiled building materials and structural components. Removing soot residues from certain surfaces of the contents inside your house can often be tricky. Some of your personal possessions could have irregular surfaces that can require different cleaning methods than your items that have smooth, non-porous surfaces.

What types of techniques do you use when cleaning my contents?

Dry Cleaning: Cleaning with dry sponges can be effective when cleaning medium to light soils and when used as a primary process to remove the excess soils before wet cleaning procedures.

Wet Cleaning: Our SERVPRO crew can clean your items with water-based detergents when dealing with moderate to heavy soiling.

Spray and Wipe: This wet cleaning process involves spraying a chemical with a spray bottle and then wiping the surface with a rag.

Foam Cleaning: This method uses a foam-based detergent to remove soils from soft, upholstered items.

Abrasive Cleaning: The act of using abrasives means that some sort of agitation is applied inside the chemical to aid with soot residue removal.

Immersion Cleaning: Fully immersing some of your contents can be very effective when dealing with irregularly-shaped possessions. This process involves dipping the item into the cleansing solution, and we often use it when cleaning Venetian blinds.

If any of your furniture or other items inside your house in Saratoga or Monte Sereno ever get coated by soot residues due to the smoke created after a fire, call SERVPRO of Campbell at (408) 371-4001.

Have SERVPRO Fire Restoration Technicians Clear, Clean, and Restore Your Home to its Original Condition

When a fire causes damage to your Campbell home, even if it is quickly extinguished. The intense heat and burning material might not create a large amount of physical damage, but they can still generate smoke and soot damage that spreads throughout the home, affecting everything it touches.

How many types of fire damage are there?

Fire damage to a San Jose home falls into these categories:

Burning and charring from contact with the actual fire
Combustion, melting, and more from the intense heat
Surface and deeper damage from the smoke and soot particles that settle on structural and personal property
Water damage from sprinklers and other efforts to extinguish the fire

To deal with each type of damage, SERVPRO has an intensive training program so that most team member qualifies as a Fire and Smoke Restoration Technician or FSRT.

How bad can the damage get in my home?

It can run from mild smoke damage to the total loss of the structure itself and everything inside. That depends on several factors which include how hot and how fast the fire burned, where it started, how long it burned, and how far did the smoke reach throughout the home. Depending on these factors, fire damage falls into three categories:

Minor Damage – In this category, there is a limited amount of physical damage with only items like paper products requiring replacement. The smoke residues left behind are light to moderate and can be removed from ceilings, floors, walls, and personal property by wiping them down with a dry cloth or sponge. For slightly thicker residue layers, FRSTs might use a small amount of water to break them up for removal.
Medium Damage – Here, the physical damage is more intensive. The intense heat causes damage to tables, chairs, and other furniture as well as structural items like cabinets, drywall, and ceiling tiles. Wood floors may require refinishing and walls and ceilings often need repainting. Smoke residues are sticky and thicker, requiring a cleaning solution to remove them. Thicker residues also leave behind odors that need elimination.
Major Damage – In this category, the physical damage is severe, especially at the fire’s point of origin. Wall and other framing are charred or burned, forcing repairs or demolition and replacement. If the physical damage is severe enough, FRTs may have to board up shattered windows or cover roof damage to secure the home from weather or animal intrusions. Smoke residues in this category penetrate surfaces deeply enough to warrant disposal of the items or using sanders and other abrasive tools to remove surface material that contains residue particles. Odors at this level often require the use of special equipment to neutralize them completely.

How does SERVPRO get all of this accomplished?

Each team has access to an inventory of commercial equipment and chemicals designed for each restoration task. These are a few of the items:

For ceilings, FSRTs use Extension Poles, pads, and Peroxide Active Ceiling Cleaner. The combination allows team members to clean every inch of the ceiling without being immediately under the residues as they fall away. The cleaning agent is powerful, but does not damage the surface, and can even be used on acoustic tiles.
Odors are some of the most persistent types of damage to remove. If the malodor particles deeply penetrated an item, team members use a fogger combined with a deodorizing agent to create a cloud of particles that can get into a piece of furniture or structural property as deeply as the odor. These particles combine with the odor, changing and destroying them thoroughly.
Mechanical means of odor elimination can also include ozone machines and hydroxyl generators.

What about everything that was soaked by the Fire Department?

We attempt to clean carpets whenever possible. The water contains smoke residues and particles from the burned or charred items, which makes them extremely difficult to clean. For everything else, SERVPRO FSRTs use a combination of extraction wands to draw off the water covering the floor and then set up air movers and exhaust fans to draw moisture out of soaked furniture like sofas and structural items like drywall. Doing this quickly enough reduces the damage to the home and eliminates the threat of secondary water damage like mold growth.

How do I keep track of everything that was Restored or Replaced?

At SERVPRO, this is a part of our restoration service after a fire or any other disaster. Each team leader provides a complete list of every action they take for the homeowner and their insurance company when needed. We have Content Inventory Worksheets and software programs to track all items and actions.

No matter how mild or severe the fire damage might be, we can help you restore your home to its preloss condition. Contact SERVPRO of Campbell today at (408) 371-4001 to learn more about our fire restoration services. We are here for you.

Tear Out Needed After Fire Damage in San Jose

Fire damage to a house often brings a few issues to deal with. The flames leave behind charring, smoke damage to the structure and contents, and in some cases, water damage due to extinguishing efforts to put out the fire.

One of the most challenging situations a San Jose homeowner can experience is fire damage. Billowing smoke coats surfaces quickly, and charring renders both structure and contents with no potential for restoration.

Tear-Out of Fire Loss

One of the first steps is to remove the charred building materials. Ruined sheetrock, door frames, and insulation that has taken on smoke damage all require disposal. SERVPRO techs carefully remove these items leaving the studs and framing supports.

Cleaning of Smoke Residues

The remaining surfaces with smoke damage get cleaned with the professional-grade cleaners, many of which are SERVPRO-exclusive formulas. For stubborn residues such as wet smoke, created when plastic or rubber items burn, these usually need the use of solvent-based cleaners to release their grip on surfaces.

Air Quality Measures

SERVPRO techs concentrate on the removal of airborne soot particles. They use air scrubbers fitted with HEPA filtration to capture the particulate matter. This assists in improving air quality and also reducing foul odors.

Odor Control Before Repairs

When the fire damage cleanup efforts complete, the techs ready the property for the necessary repairs. The treatment of the exposed framework with antimicrobial solutions is standard. Another common need before reconstruction of the property begins is odor control. The techs use various methods ranging from time-release gel pellets for light odor control applications to more intensive applications. Ozone machines were once the industry go-to for odor neutralizing but in the present two of the best options for treatment are hydroxyl generators which use UV rays to get rid of pungent smoke odors and thermal foggers which dispense an odor-eradicating solvent in the form of a heated fog, ideal for porous objects.

When you need help with fire damage in your home, call the pros at SERVPRO of Campbell at (408) 371-4001. The certified techs arrive quickly and have the skills to restore your home to its preloss condition, "Like it never even happened."

Signs Your DIY Fire Damage Cleanup Was Not Enough in Your San Jose Home

When fire damage happens in a home, mainly if there is not much charring or smoke damage visible, many homeowners take the task on for cleanup on their own. Sometimes this is not a good idea.

San Jose homeowners with fire damage that do their own DIY cleanup may find there are issues still present. Some things, such as mold or odors, have the potential to spread. Here are some of the most common issues SERVPRO technicians see and what to do about them.

Foul Odors after a Home Fire

The problem with soot is the particles range from the visible to smaller than the human eye can see. Once airborne, such as in the HVAC ductwork, they spread. Anywhere they go, it smells like a fire happened, and porous items such as upholstered furnishings and carpet require deep cleaning. SERVPRO technicians such a multilayered approach to ending smoke odors through the use of air scrubbers and thermal foggers to eradicate odors. If necessary, they clean the ductwork in the home to rid it of any residual smoke odors.

If Water Gets Left Behind After a Fire, Mold Can Follow

Mold spores are already present indoors. They remain inert until favorable germination conditions occur. After fire damage happens and the area gets soaked by the fire department extinguishing it, if all the water is not extracted and dried, mold spores can set up home as fast as 24-hours and spread rapidly throughout the house. SERVPRO technicians use their detection equipment to scope the loss area and determine if any water migrated behind walls or under flooring. They ensure the property receives both drying and the application of antimicrobials to inhibit mold growth.

Cleaning Walls After a Fire

Walls can look clean and still smell terrible. This is because, during a fire, the hot air expands, this expansion forces suit into the paint on the wall. If solvent cleaning solutions do not cause the residue to release for cleaning, a sealant is a good solution that only requires priming and painting to look (and smell) like new.

Whether the fire damage just happened or you need some assistance after a DIY cleanup, call SERVPRO of Campbell at (408) 371-4001. Their certified technicians can make the fire loss in your home, "Like it never even happened."

Our Technicians Discuss The Different Methods of Controlling Odors in Your Fire Damaged Home in San Jose

10/1/2019 (Permalink)

Burned kitchen cabinet, charred walls and ceiling in black soot Call our emergency services line any hour of the day or night, 365 days a year, at (408) 371-4001.

Our Different Methods of Controlling Smoke-Related Odors in Your Home in San Jose

After a residential fire in San Jose, SERVPRO works with the customer closely to monitor the effectiveness of the work we do. This includes controlling odors that now affect the house. While we often use hydroxyl generators to make things safer while we work, odors can still arise later, especially when humidity increases.

Because odors in a San Jose property depend on the materials that burned, we use different methods. Some mask the odors while the odors' source slowly diminishes. Others help reduce odors by absorbing them before they can reach the air your family breathes. One type, our sealant, used after cleaning, uses an encapsulation method to prevent odors from leaching out of the sealed material.

Beads that stop the odors do so because they are made of porous materials and then permeated with solvent-based counteracting chemicals. These come in either cherry or cinnamon and help freshen the air. We often put these in a shallow dish near the air intake vent.

Pellets and granules absorb foul odors into their sponge-like structures. Made from treated bentonite clay, these remove odors from enclosed spaces and open areas equally well. They do not have a scent themselves because we do not use them to cover odors.

Not all of our liquid deodorizers end up in a mister or fogger. Some of these we add to cleaning mixes to deodorize while we clean things by hand. We use a cinnamon-scented agent when protein-based fires leave a kitchen smelling acrid.

When porous materials like paneling smell like smoke but show no other signs of damage, we leave them smelling fresh again. A citrus-scented agent gets evenly applied with an Ultra Low Volume fogger in a wet mist. The penetration time takes about two to four hours, at which time we ventilate the area.

Tougher odors in your home might require application overnight of solvent-based mixtures. These mixes include phenolics, fragrances, and odor counteractants. Because these are solvent-based, some individuals experience irritation from the solvents. Although these diminish over time, we discuss the possibility with our customers before using this option.

If solvent-based fogging seems problematic for a customer, we can use water-based deodorizing fogging, instead. This option also includes a neutralizing agent that is powerful enough to handle the odor from an alarmed skunk.

Sealants work for more than smoke odors. They also keep stains from bleeding through fresh paint, inhibit the growth of mold and other microbes, and stop grease from marring the surface again. These come in tinted varieties as well as untinted ones. We can choose options when the customer desires painting on the surface to take place. These dry rapidly, and we can paint over them shortly after application.

SERVPRO of Campbell is ready to help customers in Fremont mitigate fire damage, smoke odors, and other types of damage. We also serve the areas around Saratoga and Newark. Call our emergency services line any hour of the day or night, 365 days a year, at (408) 371-4001.

Tips for Removing Smoke Odors From San Jose Homes

7/23/2019 (Permalink)

No one likes smoke odors in their home. SERVPRO of Campbell has the know how to remove that smell!

Odors in a San Jose Home from Fire Damage or Smokers Can Be Tough to Mask, But Try These Techniques

There are plenty of reasons to try and rid your home of smoke odors; you have just bought a new home or readying a place to sell to someone else. Most people consider professional damage restoration companies like SERVPRO a "last resort" to handle smoke odors in their home. The truth is that our specialty equipment helps us handle problems that you could not remedy any other way. However, there are some steps you can take to attempt to rid your San Jose residence of smoke smells without employing our services.

Air Fresheners

Most air fresheners cannot effectively combat the massive amount of smoke odors produced during large-scale fire damage to a San Jose home. However, commercial-grade products temporarily mask some smoke smells caused by tobacco use or smaller. We generally recommend using scent-free odor masking products since you may need to use large amounts of them to cover up the smell of smoke, even temporarily. Scented air fresheners can quickly become overbearing when used in these quantities. Sometimes air fresheners cannot effectively mask the smell of smoke in all reaches of your home. You may need to call in SERVPRO technicians to use industrial-grade deodorizing foggers to neutralize the scent.

Fresh Paint

The application of a fresh coat of paint over any walls and materials near the area with smoke smells eliminates some smoke odors. However, even with multiple layers of paint, you cannot be sure that no smoke odors go unmasked without professional treatment. Most of the time, smoke particles often embed themselves in nearby furniture and flooring materials that cannot use paint.

Heavy Cleaning

While some smoke residues can root themselves deep inside walls, ceilings, and furniture, most should lie on or near the surface level in the form of dust particles. A thorough scrubbing of the entire interior area can eliminate most smoke odors without the use of heavy-duty fogging devices. However, the amount of labor required for such intensive cleaning may make a professional odor removal treatment the most cost-effective solution available.

SERVPRO of Campbell is a local provider of fire damage mitigation and restoration services with access to top-of-the-line equipment and training necessary to eliminate smoke odors as wholly and quickly as possible. Call us 24/7 at (408) 371-4001.

When these kinds of problems happen in your home, it is fortunate to know that there is professional help close by who can help.

The key to having a smooth remediation with little hiccups is to get to the fire damage before it completely cools. For example, as ash and soot cools on a surface like plastic, it can begin to yellow. While it is not impossible to remediate fire damage that has sat for a long time, it is much easier to do the job before the temperature falls.

When SERVPRO commits to a job, we always go the extra mile to keep you happy, as the homeowner. We always travel to your home as swiftly as we can to begin to remediation swiftly. Our technicians have been certified by the Institution of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration (IICRC) and have gone through many training scenarios to prepare them for whatever problems they may find on the job site.

SERVPRO also uses advanced technology to fight fire damages inside of your home. After removing the burnt bits of plastic contained and charred bits of towels, our techs can focus on removing the molten cosmetic products as well as soot. We can use a house-made gentle cleaning solution, designed to lift the debris and grime away. Furthermore, to deal with the foul smell, SERVPRO can use an air scrubber equipped with a HEPA filter to remove the unpleasant odor from the air.

Did You Know That Bathroom Appliances Can Cause Fire Damage in San Jose?

6/17/2019 (Permalink)

Make sure your bathroom appliances are unplugged between uses.

Bathroom Appliances Gone Haywire Can Lead to Fire Damage in San Jose Apartments

Bathrooms and kitchens in San Jose should have specialized outlets that trip a tiny built-in breaker should a shock hazard develop. These protect people if an appliance should ever get wet by either water splashed on it or through accidental submersion in a sink or tub. Problems can still happen if someone uses one of these electrical items later because water can corrode internal components and cause them to get too hot.

Using curling irons or hair dryers with corroded contacts can leave your San Jose apartment's bathroom scarred by fire damage. Melting plastic can ignite and help spread and strengthen any flames, helping the fire get around the room. Shower curtains can become a path to the ceiling, leaving dense layers of blackened soot. Residents with this kind of damage need professionals like the ones at SERVPRO to get such disasters mitigated, and the area restored "Like it never even happened."

With the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) training, SERVPRO's technicians learn how to clean up such areas. Mitigation includes discerning between truly damaged materials that require removal and replacements and those that we can revitalize, saving our customers as much as possible while restoring their property to a safe, livable condition again.

We use several different tools to clean surfaces after fire damage mars their appearance. Dry sponges that pull soot off mirrors and fixtures protect them from the fine lines that ruin the sheen and make achieving a shiny appearance impossible. Waiting to remove soot can leave property owners wanting to replace such items, resulting in lost rental deposits or additional costs related to court-awarded damages. SERVPRO wants to help you recover completely from the consequences of fire damage and with as little stress as possible.

Because smoke travels out of enclosed areas, soot deposits affect a larger area. We clean these extended paces with small, stiff brushes that whisk soot off surfaces, followed by handheld vacuums that sweep the fine particles up. These vacuums have HEPA filters on them, so soot stays inside, incapable of sifting out and landing on your floors.

SERVPRO of Campbell's goal is to provide all our customers with a thorough job, from start to finish, including odor control measures when necessary. Our IICRC-certified teams know how to do the work efficiently, letting you put the fire damage behind you so you can get back to your normal activities. Contact us at (408) 371-4001 if you live in Fremont, Santana Row, or Los Gatos and need our assistance.

Stinky Kitchen FIre Odors Got You Down? SERVPRO Provides Cleanup for San Jose Cooks--Residential and Commercial

Oven Blaze Brings Fire Damage for Dinner in San Jose

Fire damage is not a one-size-fits-all category when it comes to clean up. Depending on the type of fire, whether it was high heat or slow moving and materials that burned, all of them leave different types of residues and odors that need to be handled in various ways. Among the kinds of damage from fires we remediate most often, protein residue is one of the most pungent we encounter. No one wants to be reminded of the time dinner caught on fire from the odor that remains.

When SERVPRO was called to remediate fire damage in a San Jose kitchen, the culprit was immediately apparent; it was from a chicken that was forgotten in an oven and was too close to a heating element. Protein fires are caused when food items burn. They generally have minor amounts of residue but leave a significant amount of foul odor. At the initial phone call, we instructed the homeowner to turn off their HVAC to avoid spreading any particles and odors to currently unaffected areas of the home.

Once on site, SERVPRO technicians wiped down all the kitchen surfaces with our professional-grade cleaners to remove the greasy protein residue, and this action helps lessen the odor. Then our certified Odor Control Technicians inspected the area and determined the best course of action would be to contain the kitchen area and use an activated oxygen unit overnight and follow up with a thermal fogger both inside and outside the contained area to neutralize the odor. Thermal fogging is very useful as it binds with odor-causing particles and eliminates them. This method is not just covering up one odor with another.

Sometimes fire damage is not from the flames, but the odor left behind. This is not a situation you have to handle on your own. Call SERVPRO of Campbell at (408) 371-4001, and one of our certified technicians can help you get rid of unpleasant odors from a cooking mishap.

Fire Damage Experts In San Jose Talk About Refinishing Charred Surfaces

If something ever burns inside your San Jose home, it is possible that the blaze torches things fast and engulfs a good portion of your contents and building materials. Once flames ignite, they can quickly spread throughout your home and use just about any substance as fuel causing you a significant amount of fire damage. In most cases, if the fire gets extinguished quickly, the loss will be less than if it has time to burn. The more oxygen the blaze receives, the hotter and faster it will burn. When several items inside your home get heated, it can become necessary to call in a professional fire damage restoration company such as SERVPRO.

Whenever things burn inside a building, items can get fully combusted and just partially charred. Any time our SERVPRO technicians work on a fire damage project in San Jose, we first figure out what we think we can save with cleaning and refinishing and what we know will have to be removed and replaced. To figure this out, our estimators arrive at your residence with a testing kit. The kit comes with all of the proper tools to test objects and their surfaces to see what work will need to be done to bring your house back to its original, preloss condition. Once we determine the overall scope of the job, we calculate an initial estimate detailing what we think needs to be done during restoration and give it to you and your homeowners' insurance provider.

After fire damage, during some situations, wooden surfaces of your contents and structural components can get charred on the surface. If the charring only exists on the surface of wooden items such as your wall studs, then it is possible that we can refinish them without having to replace them. If the charring on wooden materials only exists on the surface and does not exist a quarter inch into the wood, then we can often sand off the burnt substances and save the object. If you ever need help with your contents or building materials getting burnt or charred during a fire, call SERVPRO of Campbell at (408) 371-4001 any time of the day.

San Jose House and Wild Fires Get Help and Cleanup from SERVPRO

The Cost of Fire Damage Repair to Your San Jose Home

When you need professional restoration for any of the potential disasters or emergencies that could affect your San Jose residence, most homeowners have the same question: how much is this going to cost? Understanding pricing and related expenses for restoring a residence can help you to appreciate that while initial estimates could seem steep, at least you still have a structure that can be rehabilitated.

Overcoming fire damages in your San Jose home vary in cost depending on multiple factors. The first and most obvious of these is the severity of the damage to your home. A widespread structure fire is going to cost more to restore than a small kitchen fire localized to a single room. If the effects are from a wildfire, there may be only the ground left. Then, that is between you and your insurance company on where to proceed. Our SERVPRO technicians can help initially to determine both the scope of the work to get performed, the personnel required to do it, the equipment needed, and a general idea of how long it should take to complete. Lucky structures, not burnt out, typically have substantial heat and smoke damage that does need mitigation. We can do that.

All of these components work into the initial estimate provided to your insurance company following a fire incident in your home. By working promptly to determine this estimate, we can help you to achieve an approval on your filed claim much more quickly. Under the added pressure that insurance adjusters go through during natural disasters like wildfires, we aim to work as efficiently as possible with the both of you. Even with all of these factors, you still do not have all of the components that factor into the cost of restoring a home after a fire.

While many companies have dubbed expenses as “the cost of doing business,” our SERVPRO franchise has strived to be as transparent as possible. Much like any business, we have overheads to cover and administration rates and personnel. We have dedicated professionals that assemble a job plan, take photographs of the work to get performed, deliver and pick-up oversized equipment, and oversee the work of our technicians on-site at your home.

Initially, homeowners do not fully appreciate the gravity of what it takes to operate a restoration company with the training, certifications, and efficiency that we have. Of course, when the surrounding area has suffered catastrophic damage, our SERVPRO of Campbell emergency response team is available 24/7. Give us a call anytime at (408) 371-4001.

Fire Safety Tips

8/31/2018 (Permalink)

Did you know that if a fire starts in your home, you may have just two minutes to escape?

The most effective way to protect yourself and your home from fire is to identify and remove fire hazards. 60 percent of house fire deaths occur in homes with no working smoke alarms. During a home fire, working smoke alarms and a fire escape plan that has been practiced regularly can save lives.

Fire Safety Tips

  • Talk with all household members about a fire escape plan and practice the plan twice a year.
  • Test smoke alarms once a month, if they’re not working, change the batteries.
  • If a fire occurs in your home, GET OUT, STAY OUT and CALL for help.
  • Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas.
  • Prepare

Preparing and Preventing a Home Fire - Steps You Can Take Now

  • Keep items that can catch on fire at least three feet away from anything that gets hot, such as space heaters.
  • Never smoke in bed.
  • Talk to your children regularly about the dangers of fire, matches and lighters and keep them out of reach.
  • Download the Monster Guard: Prepare for Emergencies mobile game to teach kids about fire safety and other disasters.

Smoke Alarms

  • Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas.
  • Teach your children what smoke alarms sound like and what to do when they hear one.
  • Test smoke alarms once a month, if they’re not working, change the batteries.
  • Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years. Never disable smoke or carbon monoxide alarms.
  • Carbon monoxide alarms are not substitutes for smoke alarms. Know the difference between the sound of smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms.

Common Causes of Fire Damage

7/27/2018 (Permalink)

Home electrical fires account for 51,000 fires each year, and an estimated $1.3 billion in property damage. Learn these common causes of fire damage to prevent fire damage in your home or business:

Many electrical fires are caused by faulty electrical outlets or outdated appliances. Frayed appliance cords can also lead to electrical fires.  Under no circumstances should you ever remove the ground plug from an appliance cord. These appliance cords are only to be used with outlets that can handle the extra amount of electricity.

Another cause of electrical fires is the misuse of extension cords. Extension cords are only to be used on a temporary basis and not as permanent wiring. Extension cords can overheat and cause fires when not used properly. Never should you run extension cords through walls and ceilings, and never use nails or staples to hold an extension cord in place.

Space heaters are also a major cause of electrical fires. Space heaters should always be kept on a flat, level surface to prevent being turned over. These portable heaters are often placed too close to curtains, beds, and other combustible surfaces. Remember to always keep space heaters at least three feet from items that can burn

Smoke, Soot, Fire Restoration & Clean-Up

7/19/2018 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Campbell/Los Gatos will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.
